Middle Years Programme
In our quest to provide the finest high school education available anywhere, we offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP). This means, in addition to the Diploma Program that students are involved in at grades 11 and 12, we provide the IB MYP for all 9th and 10th grade students at Reagan. The Middle Years Program is designed to not only prepare students for success in the Diploma Program and post secondary studies, but to immerse students in highly engaging inquiry-based learning in all subject areas in grades 9 and 10.
How do you do the MYP?
Instruction is based on specific questions that not only align to the objectives of the content area, but relate to bigger concepts in the world. Inquiry is used in all subject areas to expand student knowledge and understanding of the world around them. All students work on Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills: Communication Skills, Social Skills, Self-Management Skills, Research Skills, and Thinking Skills. Each course has a set of prescribed assessments that are teacher developed and are factored into the course grade.
The Fundamental Concepts
The Learner Profile includes all attributes that IB students focus on achieving. IB students strive to become:
All classes focus on supporting students as they incorporate the Learner Profile attributes and Approaches to Learning skills into their learning style, daily interaction with peers and their relationship to local and global communities.
Reagan offers a freshman course called the IB MYP Design. This technology course serves as an introduction to the IB program while teaching the Design Cycle, a method of problem-solving applicable to all subjects. This course helps students learn to evaluate and expand their learning styles as it teaches them the skills necessary to be successful IB learners.
Doing the MYP includes focusing on your own talents, stretching your brain to think in more interesting and sophisticated ways. You will be doing a Personal Project in your sophomore year. This is a year-long project that you choose to do, based on whatever you are interested in. With support and guidance, maximum freedom and a mentor of your own choosing, you enter the world of independent research and problem solving. A culminating showcase event in spring of sophomore year allows all students to present their projects to family members, friends and the general community.
All Reagan freshmen and sophomores are MYP students. Unlike the Diploma Program, there are no external or internal assessments that students will be required to take. Recognition for being an MYP student is based on the following:
